Exploring Mental Health Through Geospatial Analysis

A comprehensive platform for visualizing and analyzing the prevalence of mental health and substance use disorders across EU

Explore Maps View Statistics

Continental Coverage (EU)

Access to mental health data from 42 countries, allowing for comprehensive cross-national comparisons.

Multi-dimensional

Compare 2D and 3D mapping techniques to better understand spatial patterns in mental health data.

Data Rich

In total 30 years of collected data with spatial distribution for each neuropsychiatric disorder category.

Our Mission

We aim to bridge the gap between geospatial technology and mental health research, providing researchers, policymakers, and healthcare professionals with intuitive tools to visualize and analyze complex datasets.

By making this data accessible, we hope to contribute to better understanding and addressing the global mental health crisis.

About the Project

Project Background

This project investigates the effectiveness of two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) geospatial visualizations through a user study.

Traditional 2D maps often fail to capture the complexity of mental health data, which exists across multiple dimensions including time, demographics, and environmental factors.

Our platform addresses this by providing both 2D and 3D visualization tools, along with advanced statistical analysis capabilities.

Methodology

We aggregate data from multiple reliable sources including IHME, Our World in Data and peer-reviewed research studies. All data undergoes rigorous quality control and standardization before being incorporated into our system.

Our mapping techniques employ:

  • Geospatial analysis to visualize prevalence rates
  • Age-standardized prevalence rates
  • Time-series analysis for trends
  • Comparative visualization tools

How to Use These Maps

  • Click and drag to pan the map
  • Use scroll wheel or +/- buttons to zoom
  • Hover over regions to see detailed data
  • Use the layer control to toggle between 2D and 3D views

Data Sources

All map data were obtained from the following sources:

  • Mental Health Data: IHME, Global Burden of Disease (2024) – with major processing by Our World in Data
  • EU Countries - Polygons(RG): Countries- GISCO-Eurostat (2024)
